Our Social Wall

Y'all! Developing Digital Detectives was published 1 yearr ago today! To celebrate, over on Twitter, I'm giving away 1 hour of (virtual) information literacy professional development for you and up to 50 of your colleagues. Check my post there for information about how to enter the ...drawing.

Thanks so much to everyone who has supported our work over the last year - it means the world to us!

If the purpose of #bannedbooksweek is to inform our communities that censorship exists, to share current data about book censorship and to sell ALA memberships, then the program has succeeded.

If, however, the purpose of one of ALA’s largest marketing campaigns is to actually affect our... communities’ support of intellectual freedom, libraries and representation that uplifts marginalized voices, then success is not the word I would choose.

I continue to hope this program will evolve to do the work our readers deserve and that our communities desperately need. It’s time for americanlibraryassociation to reframe #BannedBooksWeek as an #informationliteracy program that empowers communities to fight the mis-,dis- and mal- information that fuels #censorship.

What’s happening to #librarians and #teachers, who simply want to do their jobs by connecting readers w/books, is rooted in MIS, DIS and MALinformation. If we don’t connect #BannedBooksWeek with #informationliteracy this year forward, we’ve missed the point.

Here’s an idea: Instead of wringing our hands over the fact that Millennials and Gen Z like TikTok as a research tool, let’s update our #infolit efforts to include the devices and platforms our students use most to access information. Not sure how to get started? Out free Developing Digital ...Detectives book club can help!

Most people see false/manipulated content online as a big problem, but believe a) they are immune to it and b) people on “the other side” are primarily responsible for it. This phenomenon is known as the Dunning-Krueger Effect and creators of “fake news” count on it. It’s also just one of... the many reasons that Darren and I focus our #informationliteracy efforts on human behavior instead of technology or even the content itself.

Technology changes constantly. The way we share and consume information evolves at a breakneck pace. But human behavior is remarkably predictable.

This is a new way of thinking about news/media literacy and we think it’s what’s missing from traditional approaches. We hope you’ll join us:

#BannedBooksWeek is one of library world’s most successful marketing campaigns. But has all that yellow caution tape been successful in helping us defend the rights of readers?

Spoiler alert: No! (But all is not lost.)

We wrote Developing Digital Detectives because Darren and I believe this is the most important work we can be doing right now. That's also why we update the Evidence Locker (our book's digital resource repository) on a constant and publish a monthly newsletter (all for free)!

We... believe that helping learners discern what can and can't be trusted in the information they consume (and in the spaces and on the platforms where they actually consume/create it!) is the work of our time. But we can't do it alone.

Which is why we're offering another FREE #digitaldetectivesquad bookclub this fall. We hope you'll join us AND that you'll help us spread the word!

Unpopular opinion: it’s (long past) time to rethink #bannedbooksweek.

Thanks to School Library Connection for letting me share my thoughts on “our most popular marketing campaign.”
